Well I’m finished with my first semester of college minus the final exams I’ll have to take on April 21st & 23rd for English and Math. The courses didn’t seem to hard which was good considering it’s been almost 11 years since I was last in school, I’m just glad to be done with school until May 5th when round two starts. I’ll be taking Math Essentials English 20-1 (grade 11) and Science 14.
Shannon will be taking some more math next semester and she hopes to start her nursing program at Mount Royal College in January.
As far as what else is going on with us it’s really a whole lot of nothing! We both just seem to work and go to school not really having much time to do much else. Although they had the Juno Awards the Canadian version of the Grammy awards here in Calgary a couple of weeks ago and we went to a free concert the city put on downtown with some really cool Canadian artists.
I’m hoping the warm weather starts up soon the 32-45 degree weather everyday and snow is really starting to get old!! Last Thursday was the worst snow I’ve seen yet we had 8 inches of snow fall by noon it was the largest snow fall in such a short period since 1920. You could not see anything the snow was coming down so fast they call it a “white-out” Shannon and I actually stayed home that day the weather was so bad. It was probably a good thing we did stay home as I’ve been sick with Pneumonia for over a week now ( so not fun)
We are planning on coming home to San Diego for a visit at Thanksgiving time again and I’m really excited to see everyone and the Charger schedule just came out and they play a Sunday Night Football game against the Colts on November 23rd and I’m looking into getting tickets so I can go see a game. I really do miss seeing the Chargers play live.
I get all the Padres up here on my computer so I enjoy watching the games everyday, although I wish the Padres would play with some more consistency and start hitting for more power and every time Trevor Hoffman pitches I get so nervous!
Anyway I hope all is well with everyone and miss you all

Back to school and it's freezing here
Ok first off sorry it’s been over a month since my last post.
I had my first “white Christmas” it didn’t actually snow Christmas day but there was snow on the ground, of course it did snow on the 26th! Our New Year’s was pretty quiet we stayed home ate Chinese food and watched TV.
Ok now to the good stuff school started on January 7th I have three classes Math, English, & Computer Fundamentals (teaches proper use of Word, Excel, & Power Point)
So far I've had two math tests on my 1st I got a 90% and on the big 7 page one on Friday I got a 96% so with that and all my math assignments/homework I have and overall grade of 95.5% (yes that's me passing math!!) In computers I'm getting a 98% and I haven't received my marks for my English assignment/tests yet.
Shannon is also going to school working on Biology, as well as working at Alberta Children’s Hospital in the records department. She says her Bio is hard but I know she’s doing an awesome job.
The past couple of weeks the weather has been getting colder and colder in fact as I’m writing this it’s -40 degrees farenhight and the wind has been blowing at least 20mph.
So no complaining about a little rain and 50 degree weather cause I will have no sympathy. As far as work goes I work 3 days a week from 8:00-1:30 for Shannon’s dad at his print shop being a customer service rep and his assistant. Work has been pretty slow lately which gives me extra time to do homework. It’s kinda funny I pay to go back to school and I get paid to do my homework!
Well that’s all I have for now I hope everyone is doing well and I hope to talk to and hear from you real soon.

We're Engaged!!!!
Saturday December 15, 2007 was a very special day for us, we got engaged!!
I took Shannon out to a nice dinner in downtown Calgary at a restaurant called Milestones. After dinner we took a walk to Olympic park, where we sat down under a tree decorated with Christmas lights and I asked her to marry me. Shannon said yes and was really surprised as she had no idea I had been saving up money from when I was working for her dad during the summer. We have not set a date or anything yet but it will most likely be sometime in 2009. We want to save up money to get our own place before we get married.
There really hasn't been much else going on since we got home from Thanksgiving in San Diego.
We have both been busy working Shannon at Children's hospital and me at JRS Print Solutions (dad's company) I'm his new customer service rep/assistant.
We both are preparing to begin school on January 7. Shannon will be starting her 2nd semester and I will be starting my 1st.
Well that's all for now.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas!!

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!
Sorry for the lack of posting, I (Shannon) have been extremely busy since thanksgiving. With work and trying to complete my course, I felt like I had no free time to do anything. Although Josh hasn't been that busy he now refuses to post anything, his excuse being that I somehow am better at it. Anyways lots to talk about, I apologize in advance if this post is a little long-winded.
Us: Josh and I celebrated our one year anniversary on October 14Th. I had to work that day, so the following night we went out for dinner to an authentic Mexican restaurant called El Sombrero. We had planned to go bowling afterwards but they were closed till 9pm due to league games, and that is just too late to bowl when you work at 7:30 the next morning.
School: I have finally finished my Bio 20 course ending up with a B in the class, and am now working through Bio 30. I have also found out that I need to upgrade my math, at first they were going to start me at a grade 7 level, but I did some homework and retested at a grade 9 level. So now on top of my current course and 2 chem courses, I need to complete 4 math courses. I will no longer be able to start nursing school in September, it will have to be pushed back till January 09.
Josh is officially registered to start school in January, he just waiting to get a letter that states he has been accepted, so that he can be approved for a student visa when we come home from San Diego. At first it looked like Josh was going to be upgrading for two and a half years, due to the amount of math courses he needed to take. He was basically going to start at an early elementary level, (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), but after studying for about a month and working through the text book, he was able to retest and has been approved to start at the next level which is a grade 5/6 level.
Work: Josh spent last week taking the carpet and lino and baseboards out of my dad's house, because they are putting hardwood and laminate tiles throughout the house. Josh also got a job at a local doughnut and coffee shop, Tim Horton's, that he starts on Monday at 6am! I also finally heard back about a job interview I went to a month ago, and I was offered a position in chart management at the Alberta Children's Hospital. My last day at Safeway (Von's) will be Nov. 17Th and then I start at the hospital that Monday. I can't wait to start. With my significant pay increase and Josh now bringing in a more steady income, it's a huge relief off my shoulders, and we will finally be able to start putting some money away.
Weather: I don't know if you all keep up with the weather here, but it has gotten COLD! It has even snowed 3 times in the last 2-3 weeks. The day before the first real snow fall it was 23C(73F) and Josh and I spent the day walking around Downtown after I put a few hours in at school. You would never guess that the next day it would be -5C(23F) and snowing in less than 24 hours. We have a weather condition similar to the Santa Ana winds that you experience in California called Chinook winds. This is where warm wet winds come from coast of British Columbia and when they go over the mountains towards Alberta it gets stripped of moisture and becomes a dry heat. This is how we can have super cold days and then the next day the snow is gone and we are in shorts and t-shirts. Josh has had a ton of fun in the snow, playing with dogs and taking them for walks, making snow angels and snow men and even shoveling the snow off the deck and the stairs leading to the backyard. Check out the photo album for pictures.
And just a quick update on my cousin Nolan. He was taken off of nasal oxygen last week, and has started breastfeeding. I believe he is 5lbs or just over now, and is expected to come home Monday as long as he passes his car seat test, which is where they put him in the car seat for a few minutes and make sure his blood pressure and other vitals remain normal. On Saturday he will be 2 months old, so he will be out a month even before his due date.
Well I believe I have talked about everything, and you are all up to date. We are so excited to come visit, its only 13 days and counting.
Miss you.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!
Today we had our thanksgiving dinner, since my mom worked during the day I was in charge of Thanksgiving dinner. I made my first turkey, complete with stuffing(from scratch), mashed potatoes and gravy, ham, broccoli and cauliflower with cheese sauce, and asparagus. For dessert, I had made a Chocolate mousse pie, and my mom made a couple pumpkin pies yesterday. We had a lot of food for just the five of us (Josh, myself, my Mom, Step dad, and Brother). But its OK though since Josh eats every hour on the hour! While I was slaving over a hot stove, Josh went with Steve to take pictures of wildlife just outside of town near Elbow Falls.
On Thursday we went to Josh's meeting with his counsellor. We found out that he is at a very low level in math, but his writing and reading comprehension are at a really good level. So in total due to math, he will need to do 28 months of schooling, so with 3 semesters a year he's looking at just over 2 years. The soonest Josh would be able to start is in January. The downside is that for at least the first 2 semesters until I am able to sponsor Josh, it will cost $3000 per semester. Then when he is sponsored and a permanent resident he will be able to apply for full funding. My mom has offered to spot us the money, and pay her back in monthly payments. We are still undecided on it, one because it is a lot of money, but due to the amount of courses he has to take it would be beneficial for him to start right away and there is a high chance that he will also be able to work part-time while doing school.
We haven't really done much else this week, mostly because I have been sick with a cough and cold, that started sometime on Friday. I've been taking a cold medicine called Buckley's, which is the nastiest stuff ever but works very well, I gag every time I take it and even makes my stomach a little upset for the next 15 minutes.
Thats all for now.
Hugs and Kisses

Ch-Ch-Changes
S: Hey everyone, Shannon here, Josh has been lacking with posts lately because he feels there is nothing to talk about. I on the other hand think there is lots of things to talk about. So now both of us will be posting updates about our life here in Canada. Oh, and don't you like the new look, I just had to add my female touch to it, if I was going to post on here too.
Just to start out, we miss you all immensely and can't wait to visit. If you hadn't yet heard through the grapevine, last Tuesday Josh called Grammy and Papa to let them know that we will be coming to San Diego for thanksgiving. Arriving the day before on the Wednesday and leaving the following Tuesday. Josh can't wait to have lots of turkey and Toni's broccoli casserole and of course cheesecake. I hope he doesn't get sick of turkey because we are also having turkey this coming Monday for the Canadian Thanksgiving, and we also do turkey for Christmas.
As we are now in the second week of Autumn it is slowly growing colder here, with threats of freezing rain and snow on some nights. Josh had a very Canadian experience last week, we were leaving to go to work/school, it was a little cold outside about
-2C(28F)and when we reach the car it is covered in a thin layer of frost. I ran back into the house to grab a snow brush/scraper from the garage and have to show Josh how to scrape the frost off the windows and side mirrors. Since that day Josh feels the need to start the car 10min before we have to leave, so the car is warm when he gets in. I told him it wasn't necessary till we are actually wearing winter jackets and there is at least snow or ice on the car.
Also, as you can see in the picture above taken by my step dad Steve, when he and Josh went down to Fish Creek Park which runs behind our house, that with Autumn the leaves start to change color to orange, yellow, red and brown. The leaves have changed even more since that day just 3 days ago. I forgot how pretty it can actually be here. Probably by the end of the month there will be large piles of leaves everywhere that crunch under your feet.
On Thursday josh has an appointment with a school counsellor that has been assigned to him. He has the same counsellor that was assigned to myself. During the meeting they will discuss what courses Josh should take based on the assessment test he took a few weeks ago. Josh felt he did pretty good on the test except for when it came to math section, which is pretty hard in itself because you can't use a calculator. Hopefully he will only be required to do some math and sciences courses so he will be able to do them quickly and get his application into SAIT for the radiology program he wants to take.
As for me, I'm doing fairly well in school my marks are in the high 80's. I've completed 3 out the 4 units in my Bio 20 course so far, and it's not even mid term yet. this last unit it is very long thou and all about human systems, one specifically being the digestive system, and how a piece of food is broken down and pushed down through the stomach and intestines, and then of course how it exits. I did a lab today about the circulatory system and had to look at a slide of blood and determine the type of white blood cells that I could see, and I also had to determine the blood type of different samples by how they reacted to different antibodies.
Work is going great as well, I work about 40 hours a week and my shifts are all over the place as far as what time I start at, whether it is first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon, it kind of throws my internal clock off. Its been super crazy too because of the holiday coming, everyone is buying their turkeys. My arms are getting quite a workout, those turkeys are extremely heavy frozen! Tomorrow should be a zoo as well because it is 10% Tuesday where you either get 10% off your groceries or 10X the air miles(points you get for money you spend at certain stores, or certain items that you buy, so that you can fly for free, we hope to have enough by next year to come for another visit).
Well I think that is everything for now. I can't believe Josh said there was nothing to talk about!
Love you & miss you!

Back to school
Well after an over 10 year absence I'm going back to school. Tomorrow 9/13/07 I am going to go and take my assessment test at Bow Valley College to see where I'm at academically so I can begin my upgrading courses and eventually begin my study in the Medical Radiology Program.
I expect to be taking at least 3 classes and will be considered a full time student which means I'll be eligible to apply for a study permit until Shannon can sponsor me in May 2008. Shannon was granted financial aide for her schooling and with that her mom has offered to pay for my schooling (she was originally going to pay for Shannon's)
Not much else has been going on here, the weather is starting to cool off and there has been snow in the mountains(pic below) and it's raining today.
I'm still doing side work for Shannon's dad although, I've been off this week as they are waiting for more materials for the red cross packets to be delivered and the shrink wrap machine to be fixed.
I'm excited that the football season finally started and that I'm able to see the Charger games here. What a tuff & frustrating 1st game but hey the WON!!
I added new photos to my online webpage (the link is below this blog) they are on the last page of pictures from Canada in the "sub albums"
I hope all is well with everyone I miss you all very much.

Tuesday August 28th
Well I went to a "job fair" last Wednesday that was suppose to be for immigrants. it really wasn't a job fair as much as it was a learn about the heritage and culture of Canada so that was a big waste of half my day I was really disappointed...
They didn't really have any employers there it was more schools that offer English language courses or info booths on how to be a citizen and what not.
Cheryl found a recruiter for the Calgary Health Region and I sent her a resume they work with foreigners like me who need LMO's and work permits so I sent her my resume yesterday and she contacted me today saying she would fwd it on to some of the differ ant facilities so keep your fingers crossed and PRAY!!
I also have been offered another job that will give me all the papers and stuff I need to work here but I'm holding off on accepting it and informed him about my pending job situation with the Calgary Health. If all else fails I will take the job at Tim Horton's
The reason I'm holding off is for a couple of reasons
1. it's a fast food place (not very exciting)
2. if I do accept the job as part of the paperwork I need I am signing a 2 year contract to work for this employer. (I don't want to have to do fast food for 2 years!!)
Shannon Starts school tomorrow so she's gonna be very busy with work and school so please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
I'm still working for Shannon's dad at the print shop or as Cheryl, Steve and I call it the "smoke house" I like the work but I hate being there with all those smokers it's not fun for me and my asthma!! I come home every night smelling gross and have to shower again.
That's about it. The weather has been around 70 the last week or so and it rained on Sunday.
Be sure to check out the link I put right below this blog and above the pictures I have, it's a link to a free website I have and it's an online photo album I've made of my time here in Canada so far so ENJOY!!
Thanks again for the emails, the pictures, and to Aunt Amy for the Tony Gwynn stuff I got that today.
Take care and I miss you all very much
Josh

That's about it. The weather has been around 70 the last week or so and it rained on Sunday.
Be sure to check out the link I put right below this blog and above the pictures I have, it's a link to a free website I have and it's an online photo album I've made of my time here in Canada so far so ENJOY!!
Thanks again for the emails, the pictures, and to Aunt Amy for the Tony Gwynn stuff I got that today.
Take care and I miss you all very much

Thursday August 23rd
Well here it's been a couple weeks since I wrote so here's whats been going on.
I turned 30 on the 15th thanks for all the e-cards. WE went to see Josh Groban that night the show was great he's got an awesome voice a a great personality he was very comedic at times with his dialog. They surprised me by taking me to "the Keg" for dinner that's a super nice steak house here in Calgary.
On Sunday we went to the zoo we got in free cause Cheryl's company was having a appreciating family day at the zoo. The zoo is alot smaller than the SD Zoo and doesn't have nearly as many animals or exhibits but we still had a good time.
Other than that Shannon and I have been busy working her at Vons me at her dads print shop.
Shannon Starts her schooling next week and I'm hoping to maybe start some upgrading courses in the real near future as well.
I hope all is well with everyone and to all the students getting ready to go back to school or have started already I hope you all have a great school year. I still can't believe Chelsea is a Senior!!!
Keep up the emails and the picture sending I love them!!
Good job Matt on your recent fishing trip!
Take care and I miss everyone

Monday August 13th 2007
Well the streak stopped at 29 years 11 months and 25 days!!! That's how long I went before I broke a body part. I broke my left little toe on the door jam of the entertainment room trying to avoid stepping on the dog lying in the doorway, man did it hurt!! I'm just glad it wasn't something more serious considering I don't have health insurance....
On Saturday Shannon and I went to a farmers market I found a 2 foot zucchini for $1.00 I couldn't pass it up I had to buy it I have never seen a zucchini so big(there is a picture of it at the bottom of the page)
I'm doing some side work for Shannon's dad at his printing shop putting together some child safety awareness packets for the Canadian Red Cross it will only take a couple weeks to complete but at least it's some money coming in while I wait to get a permanent job and get my visa stuff completed. Oh Speaking of jobs I have an interview with an employment agency tomorrow morning who might be able to help place me with a company that has the paperwork I need so I can get my work permit so please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.
There really hasn't been to much else going on, just getting ready for the big 30th bday on Wednesday. I don't think they'll be a big party or deal about it. As far as I know I'm just gonna be hanging out with Shannon then going to the Josh Groban concert that night.
I hope everyone is doing good and I miss you all very much.
Please be sure to write and send me pictures so I can see how everyone is.
Until next time
